Curriculum | PSMCHECorbets Tey School recognises the importance of Personal, Social and Health Education, including Moral and Emotional education for each individual pupil within the school. Each pupil has rights from the various communities in which they are a part and will form a part, and also opportunities and responsibilities within these communities. Each pupil learns about themselves as a developing individual and as members of their communities. The significance is recognised of those communities of which a pupil is part outside of the school community and in this regard that of the home is of course vitally significant. In Corbets Tey School, Personal, Social, Moral and Health Education covers all aspects of school life and all aspects of the curriculum. Whilst aspects in support of these areas are specifically taught within designated timetabled time, regard to these areas is addressed throughout all structured subject teaching situations and non-structured break sessions. Values and Purposes"Foremost is a belief in education, at home and at school, as a route to spiritual, moral, social, cultural, physical and mental development, and thus the well-being of the individual" (The National Curriculum, 1999). Corbets Tey School believes that its work directly with, and involving, pupils and their parents has an impact on these pupils, which contributes to their development. PSMCHE at Corbets Tey School - AimsCorbets Tey School works directly with parents in the development of PSMCHE for individual pupils. The development of the individual's balanced sense of self is encouraged. The children and young people are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of the school. In doing so they are encouraged to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become as independent as possible. They are encouraged to reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They are given insight into the main political and social institutions that affect their lives and into their responsibilities, rights and opportunities as individuals and members of communities. They are encouraged to consider our common humanity, diversity and differences in order to facilitiate the forming of effective and fullfilling relationships. Health is specifically addressed in the context of PSMCHE. Aspects are supported in other curricular areas such as Science. The school supports the National Healthy Eating project. Sex Education and Drugs Education is addressed within PSMCHE and supporting subject areas Work related learning is highlighted for all classes within the school. Specifically Careers Guidance takes place in keystage 4. Political awareness is supported additionally by activities supporting the School Council , which has representatives from classes 4 to 8 inclusive. Parental LiasonThe school works closely with parents in a number of ways ranging from weekly parents' workshops for extremely young children, through to the annual review meeting to which parents are invited and which pupils themselves will frequently partly attend. PupilsThe aim is for pupils to be directly engaged in being aware of and directly participating in aspects of their own personal and, particularly, social development. This is increasingly possible as pupils get older. The strategy employed is discursive and aims to help the pupil understand and have ownership of the desired skill. Targets noted in Individual Education Plans are discussed with pupils. Additionally as situations present it is the aim to explain aspects in relation to present and later life and rights and responsibilities. Additional certification is employed to facilitate this on occasion in relation to specific and additional behavioural targetting for individual pupils. Peer tutoring or support is encouraged on occasion such as in the context of ICT lessons. Pupils are given responsibilities to carry out to support particular developmental aspects. Older pupils regularly show visitors around the school, which they thoroughly enjoy and which boosts their confidence and communication skills. Wider Community
The wider community as indicated above is seen as forming both a vital consideration and resource for work with pupils. The wider community is seen as taking in 'the world of work', technology in use', other schools, sections of the social community such as 'the elderly', colleges and the environment. Corbets Tey School has close links with local mainstream schools. The school makes full use of its excellent grounds. The school has long worked in partnership with local environmental agencies in the development and appreciation of these in order to facilitiate an understanding of the wider environment. On occasion, extrenal professionals such as the school nurse and the police liason officer are involved in aspects of PSMCHE. All pupils have an equal right to PSMCHE taught in ways appropriate to their needs. |
