Curriculum | GeographyGeography may be defined as the relationship between the Earth and its people. Geography at Corbets Tey - Aims
National Curriculum Geography is taught throughout the school as a seperate subject except in Oak Class (1) and Elm (2), where it is taught as part of a topic. Teaching is usually by the class teacher and is taught within a class group. Topics introduce concepts and fundamental skills to the whole group. Classes provide for the different abilities of the pupils. Tasks are differentiated so that the most able are extended. Other tasks may be common but give more able pupils the opportunity to extend their enquiry whilst other children attempt to complete the basic task. Geography is a practical, interactive subject. Fieldwork, where practical, should form an important part of enquiry. Maps, photographs audio and video recordings are used to develop skills in observations and deduction. The use of I.C.T. complements other aids and the use of the Internet is encouraged. The desktop, the classroom, the school and its grounds are all valuable geographical resources. The 'Local Area' is also a valuable resource, defined for each topic. It may be as small as Corbets Tey Village for map work skills. Beyond the London Borough of Havering, pupils visit London as an example of a city, or Southend as an example of a seaside town. Other places are valuable because of their function (eg. farms or a car factory). Topic plans follow a year cycle. Pupils work on topics follwing schemes of work based on the National Curriculum Programme of Study. In common with general policy at Corbets Tey School, the level at which pupils study may not correspond with the programme of study statements at the pupils Key Stage. They will however, work towards appropriate statements in the programme of study, which relate to their capability. For pupils with particular ability or aptitude, class teachers will make arrangements with the Mainstream Liason Teacher and the Headteacher for specialist support and/or lessons. In line with school policy all pupils will have access to Geography irrespective of race, belief, gender or ability. Teaching is factual and impartial and will not seek to reinforce gender or racial stereotypes. |
